Gerber is a special little dude. He is affectionately referred to as Goober or The Goobs. Upon his arrival to MN, this dog was known to have serious health issues that were to be evaluated better. He was either going to be a candidate for life saving surgery or he would have been a hospice puppy. Fortunately, it was decided that he will get to have this surgery and live a long, happy life with the best forever family we can find him.

The Goobs was born with a liver shunt. In a nutshell, it basically means his liver is wired all wrong and will not filter toxins properly, so without medication and/or surgery, his body would poison itself.  His first week in his foster home showed a lot of vomiting and neurological signs that indicated he was a really sick little guy. Even so, he was also the sweetest, most loveable pup and we knew we'd love him immediately. After seeing the wonderful vets that manage his care, his medication was adjusted and he is now thriving. He does occasionally vomit, but all other symptoms seem to have subsided. The rescue is committed to his care and seeing him through his big, complicated surgery. Due to his size, it is ideal to medication manage him until he is closer to full grown so his liver is full size and will be best fitted for the devices he will need to live. Ideally, Goobs will find a wonderful family to love him through it, so he is looking to meet someone that can take him in under foster-to-adopt contract. This means that his new family will get to have him as a puppy and do all the fun puppy stuff with him as well as help him grow into the sweet dog he will become with lots of love and guidance... the rescue will continue his medical care and get his surgery done for him... then his family can complete their adoption while he is healing and getting ready for his healthy life to begin.

In the time he has been in his current foster home, Gerber has learned a lot. He is potty trained and does very well using a doggy door to manage his potty schedule without help. He eats and drinks wonderfully. His foster family does a lot of food and treat work with handling his paws and mouth so he doesn't become food possessive. He has zero interest in being greedy and will even let his chihuahua fur foster sister share a bowl when she feels greedy. Medication with this guy is a dream. He comes to the kitchen for his 3 meds times and will just sit perfectly and wait for it to be prepared. He has learned proper leash walking etiquette, but sometimes he prefers to try to walk himself and grabs hold of the leash OR he decides a nap is best and will just stop and lay down in the road or yard. A little coaxing does the trick and he resumes the walk just fine. He loves all kinds of toys, but especially loves rawhide free bones to chew. Being a shepherd husky mix, he requires a lot of chewy options or he'll find his own around the house and he needs the stimulation. He can be silly and active and run circles around the kitchen island for so long with his large foster sister, but he also goes on the best chill mode and will lazily climb right into your lap and snuggle in. Talk about good kisser!!! Goober is the best at showing his love and kissing everyone's faces... human, dog or cat. Speaking of kitties, he lives with 3. He is overly curious and doesn't respect their boundaries, but dog savvy cats will teach him right from wrong.. Most of his teeth have fallen out and foster mommy saved the ones we found for his new forever family, just in case. He has beautiful pearly whites that sometimes need reminding that they aren't meant to be used on human hands. That is normal puppy stuff that will end soon. Gerber's foster family continued kennel training, so he is in kennel if everyone is gone and he sleeps in his kennel next to mommy at night. He would do great in bed and did have a night or two when he wasn't feeling well that foster momma cuddled him all night.

In spite of how awful he has felt on days, his illness or management of it, being puppy of two large breeds and what future he faces, he is such a well adjusted, happy and smart boy. He is the softest dog ever and has fur that just begs to be pet. Gerber will make a family VERY happy for a very long time. It is so important that his new family is ready to love him immediately as he will need stability and support in the next few months. Kids are definitely his friend, he is open to ANYONE, and he shows a special fondness for men. Please consider him for your family, he will not disappoint. The most amazing thing his current foster family has done is love dogs through medical needs and not once has it proven too tough. They are strong, capable creatures who will get through it and love you even more for helping them to do so. Foster-to-adopt The Goobs. He deserves your loving arms.

**Note on breed and age determination:

Breed and age are often determined on appearance, our own knowledge, veterinarian advice, and/or information from the sending shelters or previous owners.  Most of our adoptable dogs were previously stray dogs with little history, we can’t be 100% sure of a dog’s breed mix, and unless there is a specific date of birth listed, we can’t be 100% sure of a dog’s age. Additionally, our assessments of a dog's interactions with other dogs, cats, or children are based on OUR experiences. Your experience may differ.
