Herman is like your favorite song you haven't heard in a while, the perfect cup of coffee, and the sun on your face. He is that good, familiar feeling - like you've known it forever but there's something extra special this time, and you are grateful to experience it again. That's what you get with Herman - warm, easy feelings of love and gratitude.
Herman is a middle-aged guy who has seen some things. And while he no longer has eyes to actually see, there is a wisdom and confidence in him that allows him to adapt well to new surroundings and experiences. He quickly learns where the best dog bed is, where to get a drink of water when he's finished chewing on a no-hide, and where to turn for a tasty treat when he hears his name.
While he doesn't yet seem interested in walking on a leash, he definitely enjoys being outside and his forever family will be committed to finding fun ways to get him out and about. He would love a safe fenced yard to roam around or to be well-supervised on a long leash in an open lawn. He rides really well in a doggie stroller and likes to ride over to different parks where he gets out to explore a bit and go potty. He would make a great companion for happy hour patios and dog-friendly offices as he rests quite contently and quietly once he's found a good spot.
Herman is house trained on a schedule, currently going out to potty every 3-5 hours during the day. He is quiet through the night, but on occasion an accident has been discovered in the morning. He rests quietly in a crate when left alone and is trustworthy left loose provided the environment is totally safe for him while unsupervised. His forever home should have absolutely no access to stairs, as he doesn't seem spatially aware enough to learn those at this time. He is currently carried in and out of an apartment building to go potty. He also must never be placed on furniture or elevated surfaces unless being carefully held with no chance of him attempting to jump down or fall. Luckily, this guy is perfectly happy resting on dog beds and soft rugs on the ground and doesn't ask or try to come up, so there is no need to worry about these risks if he is left to settle on his own.
He is friendly with everyone he meets, though would probably not keep up very well with super playful or insistent canines or kiddos. He is a mellow guy who saves his energy for sporadic role polys in the grass and affectionate, snorty head-butts with his people. He has a charming spunk about him when he's feeling playful and will pounce and bark in a direction that he believes is towards you, but sometimes is a couple degrees off which just makes it that much more endearing. If you have been waiting for a dog who feels like he's already been yours forever, who will fit right in to your calmer but social lifestyle, and who will fill that sunny spot on your floor with a smile, let me introduce you to Herman.
Breed and age are often determined on appearance, our own knowledge, veterinarian advice, and/or information from the sending shelters or previous owners. Most of our adoptable dogs were previously stray dogs with little history, we can’t be 100% sure of a dog’s breed mix, and unless there is a specific date of birth listed, we can’t be 100% sure of a dog’s age. Additionally, our assessments of a dog's interactions with other dogs, cats, or children are based on OUR experiences. Your experience may differ.
